Historic San Antonio hotels acquired by the state of Texas

The state’s acquisition of the Menger and Crockett hotels is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience at the Alamo, according to the Texas General Land Office.

SAN ANTONIO — Two prominent properties near the Alamo grounds that have not been available for purchase in decades have been acquired by the state.

The Texas General Land Office (GLO) announced it has partnered with Alamo Trust Inc. to acquire the historic Menger and Crockett Hotels in San Antonio.

The acquisition of the two hotels is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience at the Alamo, according to a press release.

“By securing the footprint around the Alamo Complex for the State of Texas, we are protecting these hallowed grounds and enhancing one of our nation’s most sacred historical sites,” said Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. “This investment ensures the Shrine of Texas Liberty, the Alamo, will become the most prominent battlefield site in the country – charting its own destiny for generations to come.”

The Menger Hotel and the Crockett Hotel are both members of the Historic Hotels of America and stand on land that once formed part of the agricultural fields of Mission San Antonio de Valero, which later became known as the Alamo.

The Texas GLO said the state acquiring ownership of the properties ensures they are thoughtfully integrated into the broader Alamo experience, providing “a seamless connection between the hotels and the overall Alamo visit.”

“These properties have been part of the Alamo’s legacy since 1859. Their acquisition allows us to bring that rich history full circle,” said Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of Alamo Trust, Inc. “As we continue moving forward with the Alamo Plan, these additions represent a powerful opportunity to create a more immersive and seamless guest experience—one where visitors can explore 300 years of history like never before.”
