Hondo police secure indictments in 2013 child death case

HONDO, Texas — The Hondo Police Department has secured indictments in connection to a 2013 death of a young child.

On June 30, 2013, officers were called to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Stagecoach Drive around 3:13 p.m. for a 17-month-old child not breathing.

Once there, life-saving measures were taken and the child, later identified as Adrian Constante, was taken to the hospital. He was later pronounced deceased.

In September 2024, items associated to this case were identified during a “routine evidence inventory” conducted by an evidence technician, according to police.

“As the department continues working toward Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Accreditation, several policy and procedural improvements have been implemented related to evidence management and investigative review,” police say.

Due to these improvements, according to police, a renewed examination of the case as well as follow-ups by detectives was prompted.

After the investigation, two people were indicted by a Medina County Grand Jury: 34-year-old Marissa Lopez, indicted for injury to a child, elderly individual or disabled individual by omission, and 30-year-old Isaac Nira, indicted for injury to a child, elderly individual or disabled individual by commission and omission.

Nira is currently incarcerated with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on unrelated charges. Lopez was arrested Friday and booked into the Medina County Jail.

Police did not say how they came to the conclusion that these two should be indicted.
