Two dozen veterans, men and women who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam are boarding an Honor Flight to our nation’s capital.
SAN ANTONIO — A very special journey took off from the San Antonio International Airport Friday morning.
20 veterans will land in Washington, D.C. to tour National monuments around our nation’s capital as a well-deserved thank you for their service.
The flight took off just after 5 a.m. and for the first time all 20 veterans on board are those who served in Vietnam.
In addition to the tour of National monuments, they’ll also stop by the U.S. Army Women’s Museum because one of the people on the flight is a woman who was a nurse during the Vietnam war.
There’s also a woman who’s about to turn 100 years old on this flight. Before takeoff, the veterans wished her a happy birthday as they boarded.
This is a special flight for these veterans. Honor Flight S.A. Executive Director and Veteran Court Van Sickler hopes this trip allows Vietnam veterans to open up about what they went through.
These veterans will return Sunday morning to a water cannon salute as they taxi to their gate. After getting off the plane, bagpipers and the TSA Honor guard will lead will a procession through the airport to a ceremony in their honor.
