SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are searching for a man who opened fire into a business early Sunday morning after pointing a gun at an employee, according to authorities and surveillance video provided by the restaurant.
Officers were called to the 4000 block of Medical Drive around 2:21 a.m. for reports of a shooting in progress. When they arrived, they found several shell casings scattered outside Taqueria Datapoint.
Surveillance footage captured from inside the restaurant shows the 27-year-old suspect rushing toward the kitchen and handing over a plate of food. Police neither employees could confirm to KENS 5 the exact nature of what the argument entailed.
The video captures the suspect attempting to force his way toward the cashier who walks away in frustration. When he tries to follow her, another employee steps in and orders him to leave. That’s when the suspect pulls out a handgun and points it at the worker briefly leaving the business.
Seconds later, at least two gunshots can be heard off camera coming from outside the restaurant. Diners can be seen bolting from their seats. One of the patrons exclaims “Lock the door!” According to police and restaurant employees, fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the gunfire.
“It’s shocking, honestly,” said customer Taylor Ramirez said. “I don’t think there’s anything they could have done or said to make someone respond like that, pulling a gun on them is just crazy.”
Ramirez has been a big fan of this particular location of Taqueria Datapoint since around 2019.
“Slowly it just became my favorite restaurant here,” Ramirez said. “The staff’s always been really nice, the food is amazing.”
While the restaurant reopened later in the day and continues serving customers, the damage is still evident through boarded-up windows, glass shards on the ground, and bullet holes left behind in the kitchen.
The suspect fled before officers arrived and has not yet been identified or found. Detectives are continuing to review evidence and interview witnesses. One employee claims the suspect’s wallet was left in the parking lot, which police collected as part of the ongoing investigation.
“I hope they find the guy,” Ramirez said. “I hope the employee’s able to get justice,” Ramirez said.
While the criminal investigation continues, anyone with information regarding what happened, including identification of the suspect, is urged to contact police.
