Houston-area high school track team sets national record in 4 x 100 relay

It was a historic Saturday at Rice University.

HOUSTON — The Atascocita 4 x 100 boys relay team combined to do something that hasn’t been done this century.

While each leg is different, the four athletes combined to set a record that has stood since 1998.

At the Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University, they ran the race in 38.92 seconds — breaking the previous national mark of 39.76 seconds set by Fort Worth Wyatt.

The Atascocita relay team is made up of Tory Blaylock, Landon Fontenot, Jordan Parker and Jelani Watkins.

Here’s video of the race:

The relay team of Milton Wesley, Monte Clopton, Michael Franklin and DeMario Wesley actually set the national record twice in 1998. During the regular season, they ran a 4 x 100 in 39.99 seconds. Then, at the state championship meet in Austin, the team ran their famous 39.76, a mark that wasn’t bested until Saturday.

The record was actually broken twice last weekend in Houston. Duncanville’s relay team (Ayson Theus, DaKorien Moore, Brayden Williams and Caden Durham) ran a 39.65.
