Houston-area school districts canceling classes, activities Thursday due to rising flood waters

This story will be updated if/when more districts announce delays or closures.

HOUSTON — Houston-area school districts are canceling classes Thursday due to water rapidly moving downstream from Sunday night and Monday morning’s rain storms.

Schools closed

Cleveland ISD will be closed on Friday, May 3.

Corrigan-Camden ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.

Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.

Faith Lutheran School in Huntsville, Texas is closed today due to flooding.

Goodrich ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2 due to the continued evacuation order in the area.

Huntsville ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.

New Waverly ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.

Richards ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.

Shepherd ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.

Willis ISD will be closed on Thursday, May 2.]

Colleges closed

Sam Houston State Univesity in Huntsville and TWC are closed on Thursday, May 2. SHSU-COM will remain open at this time. 

Activities canceled

Crosby ISD is canceling all after-school activities for Thursday.

Galena Park ISD is canceling all after-school activities, events, meetings and night school on Thursday, May 2, due to the weather. 

Waller ISD has canceled all after-school activities for Thursday, May 2. Dismissal will be as usual.

Delayed

Dayton ISD will delay the start of school for two hours on Thursday.

Lone Star College-Montgomery and Conroe Center will delay opening until 10 a.m. Thursday.

Open

Cleveland ISD will be open Thursday after being closed Wednesday.

Lake Houston

We’ll start with Lake Houston.  According to the city, the lake is at 43.30 feet, which is nearly a foot over where it is normally. Water is being released from the lake until it returns to its normal level.

People who have property along the lake should secure their property to the shoreline. The water level is expected to continue to rise.  You can monitor Lake Houston levels here.

Lake Conroe

Looking at Lake Conroe, as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, the lake was at 202.61 feet. The normal level is 201 feet. If you want to keep tabs on Lake Conroe levels, you can do that here.

East fork of San Jacinto River

According to the City of Houston, the river is going to rise between 10 and 15 feet from its level on Tuesday at FM 1485 and FM 2090. Major flooding is happening now and will continue Tuesday night into Wednesday in the area, which is in southeast Montgomery County and northeast Harris County.

High water in Cleveland will go downstream to the Plum Grove area in southeast Montgomery County and the FM 1485 area of NE Harris County.

These are the locations that can expect widespread flooding along the river with several streets impacted in Harris County:

  • FM 1485 will be under several feet of water and be impassable
  • Flows may approach the deck of the HWY 99 bridge over the river
