HOUSTON — Houston mayor-elect John Whitmire and other elected officials hosted a holiday lunch for kids and staff at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center Friday.
Representative Gene Wu said this time of the year can be a difficult time for kids in the detention center as any of them won’t be home for the holidays.
“But for them to have at least a moment of happiness, where they get to talk to people who care about them, they get to eat some good food and maybe open a couple of small presents, things like that, it means the world to kids who feel unloved,” Wu said.
This year, the kids were treated to gift cards.
Wu said he hopes that in the future, other businesses or organizations can sponsor the lunch.
