Houston Mayor John Whitmire accepts KC mayor’s bet on Texans-Chiefs game…and raises him

There’s a lot of food on the line on Saturday, as well as a trip to the AFC championship game.

HOUSTON — It’s on!  Houston Mayor John Whitmire not only accepted the wager placed by Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas ahead of the big Texans-Chiefs playoff game on Saturday.  In a post on X, he raised him.

Whitmire’s response came a day after Lucas posted to X, saying that if the Texans beat the Chiefs, he’d ship some LC’s BBQ down to Houston.

“I accept your wager and offer some delicious Pappas BBQ in return,” Whitmire posted in response. “And will raise it with some of Irma’s original Mexican food.”

So which mayor will be eating good after the final whistle blows?  We’ll find out soon, as the two teams face off at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

BBQ and Mexican food aren’t the only things on the line when the two teams face off. There’s also a spot in the AFC title game at stake, with the winner moving on to face either Baltimore or Buffalo next weekend.

For the KC BBQ to make it to Houston, the Texans will have to beat the odds. They’re 8.5-point underdogs, facing a team that’s won the Super Bowl the last two years and only lost twice during the regular season—one of those losses coming when the Chiefs rested their starters ahead of the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Texans have never been to the AFC championship game. The last time any Houston football team reached the AFC title game was back in 1980, when the Houston Oilers fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
