Houston police union invites NYPD cops to Texas following Mamdani election

Houston’s police union is calling on NYPD officers unhappy with new NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani to move to Texas, citing higher pay and strong support for police.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Officers’ Union is openly recruiting New York City police officers following the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York.

In a social-media post, the union asked:

“NYPD, are you disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani? Join us!”

The post urges New York officers to consider joining the Houston Police Department, promoting Texas as a more supportive environment for law enforcement. It highlights a recently approved 36.5 percent pay raise over five years, a “supportive mayor and city council,” and a police chief described as “a retired Texas Ranger, not a politician.”

The union also pointed to benefits such as affordable housing, affordable insurance, and a DROP retirement program available to all officers.

Mamdani’s historic victory in New York

Mamdani, 34, won the New York mayoral race Tuesday in a major victory for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. The Democratic Socialist and former state lawmaker becomes New York’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the youngest in more than a century.

Mamdani pledged to “restore power to the working class” and lead “a city of immigrants.” He defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, promising sweeping changes that include free childcare, city-run grocery stores, and a new Department of Community Safety to handle certain emergency calls with mental-health workers instead of police.

His past criticism of the New York Police Department, including calls to defund it in 2020, has drawn attention since the election. He has since apologized and said he will ask the current NYPD commissioner to stay on.
