Kitchen fires and burns are a huge concern when families gather for the holiday meal.
SAN ANTONIO — Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and food. But it can also be a time for serious injuries in the kitchen. When you have so many people in the home for Thanksgiving, making sure cooking is done in safe manner will ensure your Thanksgiving doesn’t end up with any of your guests or yourself in the ER.
First, keep in mind that a turkey fire is a huge danger. Joe Arrington, the San Antonio Fire Department spokesperson told us, “When you’re cooking in your house, make sure that you know your ovens are closed and that anything on the on the stove is because you’re always there.”
Second, keep an eye on the kids, and make sure only adults are near anything can burn. Arrington added, “Obviously, it’s chaos in all of our houses. The Thanksgiving family running around, kids having a good time, everybody enjoying themselves.”
Third, in case a fire does happen, make sure you have a safe way to put it out. Arrington said, “Keep a fire extinguisher handy there in the kitchen itself. Wash things that tend to burn. If something catches on fire, obviously don’t throw water on it because that’s just possible spread even further.”
Finally, know how to put out a grease fire. Arrington added, “Don’t throw water on it. That’s just going to spread things and spread that grease. They don’t mix. So it’s going to spread that fire.”
Also remember to practice proper hygiene and make sure everything is fully cooked, to avoid any chance of food poisoning.
