HOUSTON — A police sergeant and a suspect were injured in an incident in the Galleria area Sunday evening, according to the Houston Police Department.
It happened on Westheimer Road near the Galleria Mall.
Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said several HPD officers were working off-duty security jobs where the incident occurred. Officers on site had identified a vehicle connected to a jugging incident that had happened the day before.
Bashir said that as they approached the vehicle, the driver left the private property and began to drive on the opposite side of Westheimer. An HPD sergeant attempted to make contact with the driver and was pinned between the suspect’s vehicle and another car.
The sergeant fired multiple shots, striking the driver several times. The driver continued across Westheimer before coming to a stop. Officers detained him and administered medical aid before he was transported to a hospital.
His condition is unknown, but Bashir said he sustained serious injuries.
The sergeant has been with HPD for 25 years. He is expected to survive his injuries.
He will be placed on administrative duties. His body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days, per HPD policy.
“First, I’m very grateful, nobody else is injured. This is a very busy intersection, but unfortunately, you know, the suspect is the one who dictates a lot of our actions, our responses. Once again, you know. I’m just, I’m, I’m just glad nobody else got hurt,” Bashir said.
Anyone with additional information or video footage of the incident is urged to contact HPD’s Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
