HPD: Speeding driver blows through red lights before slamming into Lexus, killing two people in fiery wreck

Police said the driver showed signs of intoxication after the crash and was being evaluated for a DWI.

HOUSTON — A driver faces murder charges after causing several crashes in Houston’s Midtown early Saturday morning, police say.

It all started shortly after 2 a.m. when deputies with the Harris County Precinct 7 Constable’s Office saw a black Ford F-150 crash into two other vehicles in a parking lot along Smith Street near Dennis Street.

According to Sgt. Thomas Fendia with the Houston Police Department, deputies tried to pull the driver of the F-150 over before that driver sped off headed south on Smith Street. HPD said the truck hit a few vehicles while speeding down Smith Street, flying through red lights, until the driver crashed into a white Lexus that had the right of way on Elgin Street.

The Lexus was spun around and crashed into a building before bursting into flames. Fendia said the two people in the Lexus died at the scene.

The F-150 driver was then taken into custody and officers said he showed signs of intoxication and was being evaluated for a DWI.

A woman passenger in his truck was taken to a hospital with injuries. Police said she does not currently face any charges.

HPD said that because the driver was committing a felony at the time of the wreck, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office is pursuing murder charges against him.
