SAPD: A passerby who saw clothing in the area discovered the bones.
SAN ANTONIO — Homicide investigators have little to go on as they try to identify some human remains found in southwest San Antonio Tuesday.
The bones were found in the area near what appears to be an abandoned hand-dug well near Quintana Road and Southwest Military Drive.
The medical examiner has been unable to release any information yet, and because of the state of the remains, police said this very well may be a tough case to crack.
An SAPD Sergeant on scene said it’s likely the person may have died some time ago, in an area that is a conduit for travel for people in the area who are homeless.
With regard to what clues are available, police said officers located the remains lodged into an abandoned water well south of Quintana Road.
Investigators said someone walking in the area saw some clothing under some rocks and when they pulled on the clothing, they discovered the remains.
The feature described as the well is not much more than a shallow, circular hole in the ground, that is encased by bricks.
The dry hole is just a couple of feet deep and does not feature any water.
A spokesman for the Edwards Aquifer Authority said the abandoned feature poses no threat to water quality because the depth of the top of the Edwards in the area is approximately 1,100 to 1,400 feet.
They said modern wells are usually contained by casings that are only a few inches in diameter, so this feature, which is about two feet in diameter would not have been very deep.
Hand dug wells, they said, normally extend to a maximum total depth of 35 feet and do not impact the Edwards, so they do not have data on this type of well.
There are plenty of encampments in this area so neighbors said it is entirely possible that people who live nearby may know someone who has been missing for a few months.
The number to the SAPD Homicide Division is 210-207-7635 for anyone who may have clues that could lead to identifying the person.
