SAN ANTONIO — Dozens of San Antonio fire crews responded to an industrial fire on the north side just before noon Monday.
Firefighters responded to the 3600 block of Highpoint Street, about five miles east of San Antonio International Airport, around 11:45 a.m. The blaze started in a business called MIT Texas, which manufactures and refurbishes airplane parts, according to Woody Woodward, spokesperson for the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD).
Woodward said there were “lots of variables” for firefighters battling the blaze, including 1,000 gallons of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid at the site.
A second alarm was called, but some of the units were cancelled after fire crews were able to dilute the chemicals with water and contain the fire to the one business, according to SAFD. Officials say there is no danger to the public, but fire crews and hazmat teams will monitor the scene until a remedial team arrives to take over the cleanup.
All of the workers were able to evacuate safely. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire will be under investigation, but Woodward said it will depend on the condition of the building.
