Husky mix named Beau is stressed from being at shelter for over a year | Forgotten Friends

Beau suffers from seizures that shelter staff believes are brought on by the stressful environment of the shelter.

BULVERDE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is Beau, a Husky mix who is a little over two years old who was found as a stray near Pieper High School on the north side. He has now been at the Bulverde Area Humane Society (BAHS) for a little over a year, just waiting to be chosen by someone to love.

Beau gets along great with other dogs, but we don’t know about cats. He might, but he’s just never really been around any felines.

He would do best with an active family with older kids. Shelter staff think that having another large dog around would be great for him, too.

Beau is a goofy, sweet boy who loves to go for walks and play with the other dogs. He loves getting attention and enjoys being brushed and petted. He loves treats… especially hot dogs.

“Beau isn’t just another shelter dog, he’s a beautiful, loving Husky mix with the kindest eyes and the sweetest soul,” said shelter staff. “But behind that gentle face, Beau is struggling. That’s because he suffers from seizures, which are made worse by the stress of shelter life. Beau didn’t have a seizure while he was fostered for a month, but soon after he came back, he started having them again.”

Stress is a major catalyst for seizures in dogs, and the shelter is a very stressful environment. Beau is on three different seizure medications to manage his seizures at the shelter. His condition is heartbreaking to watch. Other than the seizures, he is a very healthy dog.

Beau is neutered, vaccinated, chipped and waiting for you at the Bulverde Area Humane Society. He is heartworm negative, and on flea, tick, and heartworm preventative.

“Shelters, no matter how caring, can’t replace the peace and comfort of a real home,” said shelter staff. “Dogs like Beau deserve soft beds, quiet spaces, and the warmth of a family—not concrete walls and constant noise.”

For whoever adopts Beau, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

If you are interested in adding Beau into your family, please email bahshelter@yahoo.com to set up a “Meet and Greet” with him.

The fee to adopt Beau would be $200, which covers the cost of his healthcare, all vaccinations, flea preventative and more.

Their adoption procedure starts with filling out an Adoption Contract, which can be downloaded here:
Adoption Contract DOG (pdf) – Adoption Fee $200
Adoption Contract CAT (pdf) – Adoption Fee $85

Your new friend will be ready for their new home after review by one of their Adoption Counselors.
All of their animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption and have been tested for heartworm or feline leukemia / aids. They all have their age appropriate vaccinations. All puppies, dogs & kittens are microchipped.

If you’re considering adopting a dog who will join one already in your home, BAHS encourages “Meet and Greets.” Visiting dogs must be spayed or neutered and have proof of current vaccinations. Talk to a shelter staff member about scheduling your “Meet and Greet” session before coming out with your dog.

The shelter is located at 3563 Kingsnake in Bulverde and they are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For more information on adopting pets, please visit their website.

BAHS hosts a Reading to the Cats and Dogs event four times a year. The next one will be held on March 19. It’s an opportunity to grab your favorite book and come out to read to their animals from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.

All ages are welcome and the pets love it! There is no sign up necessary, all you need to do is arrive the day of the event with a book and closed toe shoes. After you get there, meet with them for a quick orientation before going off to read aloud to the dogs and cats. It’s a great chance for kids to brush up on their reading skills while making the animals feel loved. Everyone benefits. Also great for older folks as well. Connect with animals while keeping your brain active.
