‘I can’t believe he shot me’: New details into a northwest-side shooting that turned deadly

Police detail how a shooting inside a pickup truck at a northwest-side gas station turned fatal — and led to a murder arrest.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is behind bars and charged with murder after police say a shooting inside a pickup truck turned deadly at a northwest-side gas station last month.

The shooting happened Dec. 16 at a gas station in the 4100 block of Vance Jackson. According to San Antonio police, 35-year-old Kyle Parnell was shot twice and later died at the hospital.

An arrest warrant reveals chilling details about the moments leading up to Parnell’s death — and the evidence investigators say contradicts the suspect’s claim of self-defense.

Witnesses told police they watched the violence unfold at the gas station. According to the warrant, Parnell fell out of a truck as a cloud of smoke followed him — evidence, investigators say, that the gunfire happened inside the vehicle.

Parnell then stumbled to a gas pump, where he told a witness, “I can’t believe he shot me,” according to court records. He managed to get inside the convenience store, where officers found him suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police say Parnell was rushed to the hospital but died less than an hour later.

Detectives say surveillance video from the gas station, along with witness accounts, helped them piece together what happened. However, it wasn’t until the next morning — with help from another police department — that the suspect was located.

According to the arrest warrant, officers in Universal City spotted the truck the suspect had been driving and confirmed it had been reported stolen. A Flock camera captured an image of the vehicle, showing a bullet hole in the passenger-side window.

Universal City police later tracked down Albert Stevens and took him into custody. Investigators say they found blood splatter on the passenger seat of the truck and blood on Stevens’ clothing.

Police also recovered a gun Stevens was carrying, which they say matched two spent shell casings found at the scene.

According to police, Stevens told investigators he shot Parnell in self-defense following an argument. Detectives, however, say the physical evidence, video, and witness statements did not support that claim.

Stevens has now been charged with murder. He remains in jail with bond set at $175,000.
