‘I don’t want to die’ | 911 call paints chaotic picture of semi driver hanging off Kentucky bridge

LMPD released several 911 calls for a dramatic semi truck crash over the weekend, including one from the driver who was rescued.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Over the weekend, a crash in Louisville led to a dramatic rescue of a semi truck driver dangling off the Kennedy Bridge.

Louisville Metro Emergency Services released several 911 calls related to the semi truck crash, including the 18-minute call with the driver.

“Will you guys please help me, I’m about to… I’m about to fall down from the bridge,” the driver said in the 911 call. “I’m just hanging over the bridge, I don’t want to die.”

The semi was traveling southbound on I-65 when it crashed near the Kentucky border. The impact of the crash caused the cab to dangle over the edge of the bridge near Spaghetti Junction.

“I’m really afraid to move in the truck right now,” the driver told the 911 operator. “Please help me.”

At one point during the call, the driver asked, “If I don’t survive, can you leave the recording for my family?”

The 911 operator responded, “They’re going to get you out, OK? They’ve got so many people out there, OK?”

The driver was trapped inside the cab when Louisville Fire Department arrived on scene. It took crews about 30 minutes to safely rescue to driver. The driver was not injured.

LFD Chief Brian O’Neil said the rescue was very similar to the March 2024 Clark Memorial Bridge rescue.

In fact, while trying to reassure the driver, the 911 operator said, “I know they [LFD] can get you out, they’ve done it before. This happened about, I want to say, about a year and a half ago as well, and they got the person out.”
