‘I got all love for San Antonio’ | Blake Wesley’s return to San Antonio brings him fond memories

Blake Wesley returns to San Antonio with the Trail Blazers, reflecting on his tenure with the Spurs.

SAN ANTONIO — Former San Antonio Spurs guard Blake Wesley returned to the city where his NBA career began when the Trail Blazers visited the Frost Bank Center on Saturday night.

It marked his first return to San Antonio after the team traded him (and Malaki Branham) to the Wizards in 2025 for Kelly Olynyk, and the Spurs gave him a pregame tribute video highlighting his time with the team.

“It was nice. I appreciate all the support from the fans, and it was a special moment for me. It was very exciting,” he said about his thank-you video.

Wesley was drafted in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft and made a significant impact with his 2022 Summer League debut, scoring 20 points. In his NBA debut versus the Bulls, he scored 10 points and dished out four assists in a 129–124 win.

And that performance is one of his best memories as a Spur.

“My first rookie game when I got 10 (points). I feel like that was one of my best moments.”

Wesley had more than just one solid performance with the Spurs. He scored 14 points in his rookie season against Minnesota and handed out nine assists twice. He scored a Spurs career-high 17 versus Detroit in his sophomore season and improved defensively in 2024-25, posting a career-high steal rate at 2.6% and a career-low foul rate.

The former Spurs guard showed promise, but he suffered an MCL tear in his rookie year, which set back his chances of getting more NBA time, and subsequently was assigned to the G League Austin Spurs throughout his time in Silver and Black.

Add how he would eventually find himself playing behind Stephon Castle, and Chris Paul in the 2024-25 season, and that the Spurs traded for De’Aaron Fox, and it became apparent his time in San Antonio was eventually ending.

But he embraced his role as primarily a backup guard and had the occasional solid game off the San Antonio bench.

“It feels weird. Feels different being in the visitor locker room, but I got all love for San Antonio,” he said.

Following his trade to Washington, Wesley was waived after agreeing to a buyout. Portland would pick him up, but he would suffer a right foot fracture on Nov. 3, 2025, having only played six games for the Trail Blazers. He’d undergo successful surgery but will be out for weeks.

Nevertheless, Wesley still holds the Spurs and the fans close to his heart and appreciates the three seasons he spent in San Antonio.

“I just want to say thank you for all the support. Thank you for all three years,” he said. “I never took it for granted. I was excited to be here. Appreciate you guys.”
