Barstool’s Dave Portnoy criticizes Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, calling him “pompous” during a live show in San Antonio.
SAN ANTONIO — This is a lesson on how to make a bad impression on the residents of San Antonio.
With the NCAA Final Four 2025 in San Antonio, Barstool’s Dave Portnoy took his show to the Alamo City for a live taping and took a massive swipe at San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
During the filming of his show, the controversial host decided to call out Pop, but he did not hold back.
“I hate Popovich,” he said. “I absolutely hate Popovich. He is an absolute pompous a**hole.”
Said Portnoy: “Just coach the team. He thinks he’s God. He thinks he’s the righteous morality. He always lectures you. I always feel like Popovich is lecturing you. I don’t want to hear it. Coach your team and shut up.”
Portnoy did not stop there.
He bashed Pop for telling fans not to boo ex-Spur Kawhi Leonard during a game and believed he is not an all-time great coach because he had Tim Duncan.
However, he clarified that his issue isn’t with the Spurs franchise but with Pop only.
“I know I’m in the middle of a San Antonio crowd, but I just have to say I hate Gregg Popovich,” he shared on X.
(Note: Strong language in the video below)
Portnoy is known for his outlandish takes and over-the-top personality, but perhaps he went too far this time by aiming at Pop and roasting him without knowing all he has done for the city, the players, and his generosity.
The Spurs coach will not return this season after suffering a mild stroke but did say he is recovering and hoping to return to the sidelines next season.
