SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio who moved into an apartment complex on the far west side two months ago, is dealing with the frustration of loss after someone stole his beloved sneaker collection.
Police are now searching for the burglary suspect, who was caught on a neighbor’s doorbell camera.
“This happening was just a huge blow to my mental health and most importantly my own safety,” said Deshawn Dixon, who has been a sneaker fanatic since childhood. “Right before the pandemic hit, I bought a pair of Air Jordan 1 Pine Greens. It was almost like a hit of dopamine. I was like, ‘I got to do this again.’”
Over five years, Dixon’s collection grew to more than a dozen pairs of sneakers, many of which he’s worn only once or twice.
The break-in happened on Tuesday, June 24 at the Legend Apartments in the 8000 block of Marbach Road. According to police, the suspect’s initial presence was recorded at 12:30 p.m.
Dixon said he had just come home from work around 8 p.m. when he saw his apartment door left open. He rushed to his bedroom, which was a mess with clothes all over the floor and his sneaker collection nowhere to be seen.
Surveillance footage shows the masked suspect walking in and out of frame. Loud bangs are heard, which Dixon believes indicates the suspect’s successful attempt to enter his apartment. The video eventually reveals the suspect carrying Dixon’s red comforter with boxes of shoes inside.
Dixon’s 21 pairs of sneakers are valued anywhere between $5,000 and $6,000.
“He was at least nice enough to leave me a pair of shoes of some degree,” Dixon said.
The suspect came back three hours later and this time took off with video game consoles, Dixon’s passport and the title to his vehicle.
Despite the violation, Dixon remains committed to his passion.
“It just sucks that I have to start over now after five years,” he said. “But I’m going to keep on collecting shoes because it’s just what I love to do.”
Dixon plans on installing a home security system in the coming days. As of now, San Antonio police have not made any arrests.
Anyone with information about the burglary is urged to contact SAPD.
