‘I heard two pops’ | Witnesses recall moments when SAPD officers were shot by suspect on the west side

“I had seen the cop panicking, he was running back from his car, back to the person lying on the ground, he looked terrified,” the witness said.

SAN ANTONIO — Two officers were shot and one person is confirmed dead on the west side of San Antonio Wednesday morning, officials said.

Several police units and first responders are at the scene at Highway 90 and West Military Drive around 8:34 a.m. Traffic cameras show many police cars gathered around a motel on the access road of Highway 90.

KENS 5 spoke to a few witnesses on the scene. A woman nearby who was opening her store wanted to remain anonymous but said she heard it all.

“I heard two pops, then I heard ‘boom, boom.’ I was like right after that, continuous fire, I went outside and I had seen the cop panicking, he was running back from his car, back to the person lying on the ground, he looked terrified,” she said.

She told us it’s not uncommon to hear gunshots in this area, but she says she never expected police officers to be shot.

Even a block from the scene, another business told us witnesses ran into their store.

At the time, everyone was just trying to figure out what was going on and where the gunshots were coming from.

“A bunch of customers ran up, my intuition was to not go outside, people running my way. When I opened the door to let them in, they told me there was a guy outside shooting.”

This is an ongoing investigation.
