“I just can’t believe it” | Police say man was shot, killed while working on his car in his driveway

Neighbors say they heard gunshots and saw a young man taking off from the location of the shooting, although it was too dark to make out a description.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is dead after he was shot while working on a car in his driveway on the south side, according to police.

San Antonio Police responded to the 700 block of Britton Avenue near I-35 and Division Avenue around 10:20 p.m. Sunday for reports of a shooting in progress.

Officers arrived at the home and found the man dead at the scene, with gunshot wounds to his head and body. He was identified as Rogelio Valadez, 61.

Rodrigo Castro, who lives in the neighborhood, recalls hearing the commotion.

“I was just watching TV and I sitting on the couch when I hear gunshots,” Castro said.

Castro witnessed a man taking off in a hurry toward Britton and Commercial avenues after the shooting. He couldn’t get a look of the person since it was dark outside.

“When I see the man walking over there, I just watching and when he take off, I go out but I don’t see nothing else,” Castro said.

While he didn’t know Valadez personally, Castro has waved and said hello to him in the past.

“I just can’t believe it, man. It’s too tough. It’s hard,” Castro said.

Another neighbor who asked to be anonymous, says they remember seeing a young man acting in a suspicious manner as she was watering her grass in the backyard.

“They kept coming back and forth. I don’t know who know who that was because I’m from the neighborhood. He didn’t look like someone we know,” the neighbor said.

Police do not have a description of the shooter. And nobody saw or heard anything.

Anyone with information into the shooting is urged to call San Antonio Police.
