‘I never thought this would happen’: Son of flood victim travels to SA from Korea to lay his mother to rest

Esther Chung was identified as the 13th victim of the June 12 floods. Friends described her as a kind and giving, devoted Christian with a big heart.

SAN ANTONIO — The 13th victim of the deadly flash floods in San Antonio on June 12, has finally been identified.

The Bexar County Medical Examiners Office has identified the victim as 77-year-old Esther Chung. KENS 5 spoke with Chung’s family, who are visiting from Korea as they lay their mother to rest.

The family is obviously saddened by Chung’s death and her son, Huiun Hu Lee, said he couldn’t put into words what he is feeling.

With the help of a translator, KENS 5 spoke with Lee, who said he never thought this would happen to his mother.

Lee said Chung traveled to Korea two months ago to visit him. He says he is going through mixed emotions during this sad and difficult time.

Many friends of Chung have spoken with her son and he said everyone has nothing but good things to say about her, speaking of her with high praise.

The family connected KENS 5 with a neighbor and friend of more than 10 years, Tamara Glenn.

“She was giving. She was kind. She had a big heart, loved to cook. She was one hell of a tailor. She was always trying to feed you. She’s just a great person,” said Glenn. “She would do anything for you.”

Glenn said she loved Esther and will miss her knocking on her door, bringing her food and taking her shopping. Glenn describes Esther as a sweet soul who will be truly missed.

Glenn says she was also thankful she got to meet Esther’s son.

“I was elated because he looks like her and she talked about her kids,” said Glenn.

The Bexar County Medical Examiners Office says Esther Chung was the last of 13 people identified, who died in the June 12 floods.

Glenn says it’s difficult knowing the way Esther died and that it took two weeks to identify her.

“It was hurtful, painful. So I can’t say enough, because it still hurts. It’ll probably be like that for a minute because we were kind of close, I’m glad her family was able to get here to take care of her,” said Glenn.

Glenn says that Chung was also a devoted Christian. Chung’s family said there will be a memorial service for her on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the All Nations Church, located at 1250 Holbrook Road.
