‘I showed him a wrap-around move’ | Jamal Crawford on his recent workout with Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama

SAN ANTONIO — A photo of former NBA guard Jamal Crawford and San Antonio Spurs‘ Victor Wembanyama went viral recently, showing the pair working out together in San Antonio.

The photo was a hit, and Spurs fans were eager to see Wemby improve his game thanks to Crawford, who was quite the spectacular scorer during his playing days.

So, how did this pairing begin?

Crawford explained how he started to help the Spurs center improve his game in an interview on “The Dan Patrick Show.”

“We go back to earlier this season when we had him on the show. I asked him, because he had been doing some crazy moves, so I asked him if he can do this particular move,” he explained.

Crawford said Wemby told him he’d been making that move for years and shared that their relationship grew from the 2024 NBA All-Star Game when he first showed him some moves.

But what exactly did he teach Wembanyama in San Antonio?

“I showed him a wrap-around move,” he said. “It’s only reserved for tall guards. Guys with long arms can pull this off, and I thought he could take it to the next level.”

Wemby already has incredible talent handling and being creative with the ball, but adding some pointers from Crawford will only make the French big man more unstoppable in his second season.

Crawford explained why it took the Spurs and coach Gregg Popovich much time to acclimate to Wemby’s uniqueness on the floor.

Because the Rookie of the Year can do so many things, adjusting to that player takes time.

“He’s such a unique talent,” he said. “I can understand Pop and those guys thinking because you don’t know what you have until you have it.”

The former NBA Sixth man also gave his opinion on the Spurs’ need to bring a point guard to help Wemby reach the next level.

“Getting that point guard to grow with him and that fits him will serve him well,” he said.”
