‘I thought I lost my grandma’ | SA family left sifting through ashes after fire destroys home

“They made it out with just pajamas and no shoes and the house was still in flames,” said Rosemary Pena, granddaughter.

SAN ANTONIO — A family is trying to salvage what they can for their grandparents after a fire destroyed their home in north central San Antonio.

The family says their grandfather had to pull their disabled grandmother out of the burning home.

“I thought I lost my grandma,” said Rosemary Pena, granddaughter.

Through tears, Pena shared the fear she had when she heard her grandparents home was on fire.

“She’s the only thing I have, I cant lose her,” said Pena.

It was just after 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, when Pena’s grandfather called to tell her their home in the 100 block of University Avenue, near Fredericksburg Road and North Brazos Street, was on fire.

“I just didn’t know what to say other than, ‘Get out, I’m on my way!’” said Pena.

Pena says she got to the home to find fire trucks everywhere, she worried her grandparents weren’t able to make it out of the burning home.

“There’s only one way to get in her room and one way out and that’s through where the fire was, so that’s what went through my mind, that I lost her and I lost both of them,” said Pena.

Pena says her grandmother is disabled and has multiple medical conditions and uses a wheelchair.

“He couldn’t wheel her out, so he pulled her out and he did his best and he saved her,” said Pena.

Wearing only pajamas and no shoes, Pena’s grandparents made it out safely but the home was destroyed along with the memories of their home sweet home.

“Devastated. These are memories, yes, the house could be replaced, yea but those core memories,” said Pena.

According to the family, they believe a candle is to blame but the cause is still under investigation.  The family didn’t have insurance, so they are trying to salvage what they can.

The couple is staying with other family, but say it’s temporary. Unable to rebuild, they started a GoFundMe to try and get them into a senior living apartment or small home.

Pena says the family is also trying to cope with the devastating loss of the family home.

“It’s hard knowing that this is a total loss. It’s never going to be the same again.,” said Pena.
