KERRVILLE, Texas — A Kerrville Independent School District student is recovering at a San Antonio hospital after being run over by a school bus last week, suffering multiple serious injuries that have required repeated surgeries.
17 year-old Zayne Boggs was riding his electric skateboard, Wednesday afternoon when the crash occurred, according to his mother, Jessica Boggs. She said her son was on his way to work after school when he hit a bump in the road, lost control and fell into oncoming traffic.
“He hit rumble strips on the concrete, which sent my board into a wobbling motion,” Zayne said from his hospital bed. “When I fell, I clipped the back tire, which proceeded to run me over.”
Jessica said she was at work when she received the call that her son had been struck by a Kerrville ISD school bus.
“I thought I was going to lose my kid. I honestly couldn’t breathe,” she said. “It’s every mom’s worst nightmare. No mom wants this for their child.”
Zayne was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he has undergone five surgeries so far. His most recent operation lasted about 10 hours, and additional procedures are scheduled.
“He has a fractured tibia, a shattered pelvis, a ruptured bladder,” Jessica said. “It was also disconnected posteriorly from the urethra. He has thoracic and lumbar injuries, and he’s going in for his sixth surgery.”
While the family has health insurance, Jessica Boggs said it will not cover all of Zayne’s medical expenses. A GoFundMe account has been created to help with costs related to his treatment and recovery.
“It’s very humbling,” she said. “I’ve been humbled daily.”
Jessica said she is grateful for the support the family has received from the community but emphasized that her son faces a long road ahead.
“He’s going to have to learn how to walk,” she said. “It’s going to be rough. He’s only 17, and I’m trying to keep a 17-year-old’s morale up.”
