SAN ANTONIO — A driver’s dash camera video captured the moment a group of motorcyclists sped through traffic on I-10 in San Antonio over the weekend. At one point, it appears one biker caused a vehicle to lose control.
The woman who witnessed the incident wants to remain anonymous but said she had her 6-week-old baby in the back seat and nearly crashed into that vehicle.
“I was out of my mind scared,” she said.
She said it happened around 6 p.m. Saturday while driving east on I-10 near De Zavala Road.
“I just see one of the bikers swerve to my right, swerve towards to me from my left hand side over all the way right to the highway then the red little Toyota car started fishtailing,” she explained.
She said about 15 motorcyclists were driving recklessly, speeding and splitting lanes, which is illegal in Texas.
“I looked up in my rearview mirror, there was two other cars that have spun out also but I don’t know if they hit anything,” she said.
She called 9-1-1 and spoke with an officer. San Antonio police said they were unable to locate the crash scene or victim, so a report was not made.
“I can only imagine what this poor driver was going through, spinning across the highway, having all these other cars coming right at you,” she said. “It was just crazy that no one else hit him. It was a miracle.”
However, Lt. Matthew Porter with SAPD’s traffic unit was able to watch the video.
“In my opinion, what may have been what happened is that that vehicle was trying to make a lane change and these motorcyclists came up on the car so fast so they probably didn’t see that motorcycle which caused that vehicle to take evasive action which led to a crash,” Porter said.
He said even though the biker did not physically hit the vehicle, they could still be at fault if their reckless driving led to the crash.
“Motorcyclists also need to take in consideration that they may be hard to see so when you’re driving at a high rate of speed, you’re putting yourself at a greater risk,” Porter said.
Porter said it is important for all drivers to always be on the defensive and pay attention.
“You mix in high rates of speed or you know weaving in and out of traffic, that’s just a recipe for an accident waiting to happen,” Porter said.
While police are not investigating this incident, Porter said the witness did the right thing by calling 911.
He added if you have concerns with bikers speeding or driving recklessly in your neighborhood, you can contact your SAFFE officer to ask for more patrols.
