Police say they’re looking for one of two suspects involved in the shooting that happened early Saturday morning.
SAN MARCOS, Texas — When asked about her relationship with her 20-year-old son Alek Pacheco, Sandra Gonzales speaks with pride.
“He was everything that any mother could have. Very loving support, fun, there’s a lot of times that we just joke around. But yes, he loved his family a lot,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales lived in Houston and Pacheco lived in San Marcos. She says her son would always stay in communication, but Saturday, July 19 was different.
Early Saturday morning, officers were dispatched to San Antonio Street and Guadalupe Street in San Marcos for reports of shots fired. When they arrived at the scene, they found two victims dead: 24-year-old Anthony Barrera and Pacheco.
The victims are not believed to be Texas State University students.
According to police, a man was on a date with a woman who was allegedly already married. The woman’s husband showed up and a fist fight broke out. The husband is not being publicly identified.
Police say as the boyfriend and the husband fought on the street, another man grabbed a chain off the boyfriend’s neck. The boyfriend then allegedly chased the man who took the chain, and another person fired multiple gunshots.
The boyfriend was identified as Barrera, who died at the scene. Police believe Pacheco was a bystander who was hit in the head and died at the hospital.
Police say several people were detained and subsequently released.
Police revealed they arrested 19-year-old Jermiah Jayden Tobias, who they believe fired multiple gunshots. On Sunday, police revealed that they are looking for another suspect, Avery Saul Bowman, who could be charged with capital murder since he allegedly robbed the victim right before the victim was killed.
Gonzales says she has seen pictures and videos of what happened.
“I know I shouldn’t have seen it but I just kept seeing it over and over, seeing how my son got shot,” Gonzales said. “I wish he would have just walked away.”
As police investigate this deadly incident, Gonzales seeks justice and answers for her son who she is not ready to live without.
“Just seeing him gone, it’s really taken it hard on me. My heart hurts,” Gonzales said.
To help with funeral expenses, Pacheco’s family created this GoFundMe.
A mini taco benefit is also taking place to raise money at 11 a.m. July 26 at “I Don’t Know” Bar on East Hopkins Street in San Marcos.
