Ice on San Antonio highways this week? TxDOT isn’t taking any chances.

Severe winter weather continues to loom over much of Texas, and San Antonio is no exception. The coldest temperatures of the season have chilled down the Alamo City, and wintry mix or snow remains a possibility as a series of arctic blasts sweep the region. In all of this, Texas highways can become a treacherous endeavor, but a state agency is working to reduce the risk.

At around 9 a.m. Monday morning, January 6, Texas Department of Transportation crews began pretreating highways on the Eastside of Bexar County to try and prevent possible freezing. From Downtown San Antonio, north up to U.S. 281 and Loop 1604, east over to I-10 and FM 1518 and south down to 1604 and Highway 16, TxDOT crews have spraying briny mixtures on highways to reduce ice formation.

Large, slow-moving TxDOT trucks can be seen spraying the mixture over highways Monday, and the state transportation agency is asking drivers to move over for crews trying to keep local highways safe amid severe winter weather.

The greatest chance for wintry mix, or even snow, in San Antonio won’t come until later this week. The National Weather Service is growing more and more confident in winter precipitation Thursday morning, January 9, but the forecaster is still unsure exactly what that will look like. However, it’s sure to have an impact on local roadways, so crews are working tirelessly to reduce impact.
