Ice shuts down Highway 281 in San Antonio

San Antonio woke up to chilly temperatures once again Saturday morning, February 22. As rain continues to fall across the city, local roadways are also facing icy conditions. So, you may want to check on road conditions before you travel this morning

The Texas Department of Transportation said it got reports around 7:30 a.m. of ice on U.S. 281north at its Redland Road exit. Nearby, a crash has blocked off two lanes at U.S. 281 N. near Bulverde, according to Sigalert. TxDOT cameras show crews are on site working to clear the crash.

Light freezing rain and drizzle will continue to affect areas through 10 a.m. on Saturday, according to NWS. Forecasters warn ice accumulations are possible, and untreated roads could quickly become slick.

Officials warned of frozen precipitation on Friday, February 21, and asked drivers to be mindful of crews working to treat roads locally and across Texas. A crash near downtown San Antonio Friday night impacted traffic, forcing drivers off the highway.

Some areas near San Antonio also saw patchy ice forming early Saturday morning. The National Weather Service in San Antonio even shared a photo of a thin layer of ice forming on a vehicle outside their headquarters in New Braunfels.
