But it won’t be in the basement. It’s part of a collection of pop culture items that are at The Alamo museum.
SAN ANTONIO — Do you remember the iconic red bike from the 1985 movie, “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure?” It’s the bike that was stolen from Pee Wee after he refused to sell it to his rival, Francis.
The Alamo has now officially acquired the original screen-used stunt bike from the film and you can go see it!
This acquisition coincides with the 40th anniversary of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure this summer.
The Alamo says the bike will be permanently displayed in the future Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, which is opening in the Fall of 2027.
“We are thrilled to add this beloved piece of film history to our collection,” said Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of the Alamo Trust, Inc. “The Alamo holds a special place in the hearts of people everywhere, and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure helped to introduce a new generation to the historic site. This artifact perfectly illustrates how the Alamo lives on in pop culture, and soon, visitors to Texas’ top tourist destination will be able to see it up close in our new world-class museum.”
For those of you who don’t remember, the theft of his bike sends Pee-wee on an epic cross-country adventure to find it.
Pee-wee comes across quite a few characters and laughable situations on his quest to find his beloved bike.
His search leads him to Texas, and The Alamo, after a psychic tells him it’s being held in the basement of the Texas mission.
When he arrives at the Alamo, he learns at the end of a guided tour by SNL’s Jan Hooks that the building does not have a basement.
Pee-wee Herman famously asks, “Aren’t we gonna see the basement?” during the tour. The tour guide replies, “There’s no basement at the Alamo!” with a laugh.
“And while there’s never been a basement under the historic Alamo Church (despite what Pee-wee was told), the new museum, built along the western edge of the historic Alamo footprint, will have one,” The Alamo said in a press release.
You can be among the first to see it later this year during a limited-time showing inside the Ralston Family Collection Center.
Full details coming soon for the free movie screening at the Plaza de Valero and limited-time viewing this year. And find out where the bike will be stored for safekeeping. Maybe in the basement?
