‘I’m a goon, bro’ | Man arrested for murder after New Year’s Day shooting near downtown San Antonio

On Jan. 1, Jason Huizar was hanging out with his sister Hailey Martinez on the 100 block of Paso Chico Alley before the unthinkable happened.

SAN ANTONIO — Authorities have arrested a man in connection to the murder of a man who was shot in the chest while hanging out with his sister on New Year’s Day.

On Jan. 1, Jason Huizar was hanging out and drinking with his sister Hailey Martinez on the 100 block of Paso Chico Alley. The pair were also hanging out with two other males they had met earlier at the Brazos Food Mart.

At the time, the two men were only identified as a Hispanic male wearing a brown khaki hat and a black male wearing a purple jacket.

The black male has not been identified but the Hispanic male was later identified as Geranimo Campos and the lead suspect.

After hanging out for about 15 minutes, Martinez went back to the food mart, leaving her brother Huizar with the two males they had met earlier.

When Martinez returned, she found Huizar on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest and Campos running away. Huizar was transported to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Martinez told police that Campos and Huizar were in a verbal argument before she left for the food mart and heard Campos allegedly say, “I’m a goon, bro; I get active all day.”

She went on to say that she was sure Campos was the shooter as she saw him running away and the other male they were with stuck around to tell her he was sorry for what had happened before leaving the scene.

Another witness told detectives that although she did not see the shooting take place, she did see Campos put a black firearm in his pocket immediately after shots were fired and before he ran away.

The witness went on to say that she heard Campos telling Huizar, “This is my block, and you don’t belong here,” before mentioning that he worked at a local H-E-B.

Later in the evening, detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage from the Brazos Food Mart, confirming Martinez’s statement saying they met Campos and the other male there earlier in the night.

The footage also showed the two males leaving the food mart in the same direction where the shooting took place and Martinez returning to the store about 15 minutes before the murder.

The following morning, authorities were able to identify the Hispanic male as Geranimo Campos after showing a still photo from the Brazos Food Mart footage to the H-E-B store director, who confirmed Campos was an employee at that location.

Later that same day, detectives presented Martinez with a six-photo lineup where she was able to identify Campos as the shooter.

The following week, detectives presented another six-photo lineup to the other witness who was also able to identify Campos as the murder suspect.

Both Martinez and the witness told detectives that the other male with Campos never acted aggressive during the altercation and even told Campos to calm down before the shooting took place.

On Thursday, Campos was arrested and now faces a murder charge.
