HOUSTON — Rex Ryan stirred the pot ahead of the Texans’ wildcard matchup against the Chargers on Saturday. Now he’s apologizing for his comments.
The former coach and current analyst called the game a “bye week” for the Chargers ahead of the game, implying it would be a cakewalk. The Texans took it personally and proved him wrong, beating the Chargers 32-12.
“Who had a worse day, me or Justin Herbert?” Ryan said on ESPN Sunday. “It’s probably right there.”
Herbert was picked off by the Texans four times on Saturday, which is more times than he was intercepted the entire season.
Texans running back Joe Mixon went live on Instagram after the game with a cigar in his mouth to address Ryan’s comments.
“How about that bye week?” his teammates could be heard saying in the background.
“We smoking on that Rex Ryan ‘bye week’ pack,” Mixon said.
ESPN played the clip for Ryan Sunday morning.
“You got to tip your hat to them,” Ryan said in response. “I’m sorry, Houston.”
But did his opinion on the team change? Here’s what he had to say.
“But if you think I’m gonna, I’m not picking you next week either!”
Here were Ryan’s original comments before the game.
