SAN ANTONIO — A new council and mayor will be ushered into San Antonio City Hall.
The 11 members, including the four new City Council members, will be inaugurated in a ceremony on Wednesday.
Not only is this the first time in eight years we’re getting a new mayor, but this is also the first time all 11 member of the council will be serving four-year terms.
Districts 4, 6, 8, and 9 will have new representatives as Edward Mungia, Ric Galvan, Ivalis Meza Gonzalez and Misty Spears will be joining the council.
The biggest change to City Hall will be mayor Gina Ortiz-Jones.
We spoke to the new mayor on our morning show last week. Here’s what she told us she’ll be concentrating on first when she gets into office.
“I am most focused on the budget gap. Anybody knows that a budget is a moral document, and, you know, the gap that we have in particular in 27 is not insignificant,” said Gina Ortiz-Jones. “And so it’s important that the community understands, you know, how we got here, and how we expect to move forward to ensure that we’re doing what we need to do.”
Along with the budget, the mayor and new City Council will have to also tackle Project Marvel, the city’s plan for a sports and entertainment district, which also includes the new Spurs arena.
That project has an estimated price tag of more than a billion dollars.
Ortiz-Jones told us her team has been meetings with Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s office to ensure a smooth transition.
This will also be the first year new salaries for the mayor and councilmembers will kick in.
