SPRING BRANCH, Texas — On Saturday, Homes For Our Troops presented the keys to a newly built, mortgage-free home to an injured U.S. Marine veteran, providing features designed to support his independence after combat-related injuries.
Marine Cpl. Shawn Seeley was injured in Iraq when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, leaving him with severe injuries, including the loss of use in his right leg, a right-thumb amputation and significant damage to his right hand.
The specially adapted home includes a single-level, open layout along with accessibility features such as pull-down shelving, lowered countertops and roll-under access to the sink, stove and workspaces.
The design allows Seeley to move through the home and cook safely whether using a prosthetic leg or a wheelchair.
Homes For Our Troops said the home is intended to help Seeley live more independently and comfortably.
Slightly more than 100 people reportedly attended the key presentation ceremony.
