SAN ANTONIO — An inmate at Bexar County Jail was found deceased by staff on Saturday, BCSO says.
The inmate, identified as a 50-year-old male arrested for possession of marijuana on February 22, was found by a deputy during a face-to-face observation check attempting to commit suicide in his cell.
The deputy promptly initiated a Code Blue One at 2:02 p.m., and went into the cell to intervene and began life-saving measures. Medical staff arrived and took over for the deputy, followed by first responders from the San Antonio Fire Department.
The inmate was then taken to University Hospital for further treatment. Despite the best efforts from medical personnel, the inmate succumbed to his injuries. Medical staff at University Hospital pronounced him dead at 7:55 p.m.
As per standard procedure, the BCSO Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Internal Affairs (IA), and the Public Integrity Unit (PIU) are investigating. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been notified of this custodial death.
BCSO says that all of their policies and procedures were followed during the observation checks conducted by the deputy.
The inmate’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of his next of kin.
This is the second inmate death at the Bexar County Jail so far this year.
In 2024, BCSO reported 13 inmate deaths at the jail, which was down from 18 deaths in 2023.
