SAN ANTONIO — An inmate is dead after a medical episode at the Bexar County jail Wednesday morning, according to officials.
A 9:15 a.m., an inmate told a deputy that his 28-year-old cellmate was unresponsive and needed medical assistance.
Once the deputy made it to the cell, he administered Narcan to no effect, according to officials. More life-saving measures were initiated until medical staff took over.
Despite efforts from multiple officials, the inmate was pronounced dead in the cell.
Officials say the inmate had been “experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a controlled substance” at the time of the incident. Preliminary investigation suggests that he suffered a “medical episode compounded with withdrawal symptoms.” The medical examiner will ultimately rule his cause of death.
The man has not been identified as the next of kin have yet to be notified. The man was charged with two drug charges at the time.
