SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County Adult Detention Center inmate has died after a “sudden-onset medical episode,” BCSO says.
On Thursday, 57-year-old Elizabeth Anne Nero was in her assigned housing area when she had the medical episode, BCSO says. Onsite medical personnel responded, and her vitals were stabilized. Officials say however she needed additional attention for further assessment.
EMS arrived, ready to take her to the hospital. However, Nero’s condition worsened and she became unresponsive. Life-saving measures were taken, but she was pronounced dead around 5:31 p.m.
Officials say the incident appears to be the result of a medical episode.
“At this time, all policies and procedures appear to have been followed,” BCSO said in a statement.
Although the medical examiner has yet to make the final determination, BCSO believes that drug dependency or detox issues may have contributed.
The Castle Hills Police Department has taken the lead in the death investigation as the Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been notified.
BSCO is also conducting a separate investigation.
Nero was arrested on May 29 for possession of a controlled substance PG 1/1-B <1G and failure to identify as a fugitive with intent to give false information.
This is the fourth inmate death of this year in the Bexar County jail.
