Interim Dallas Police Chief releases statement on federal immigration amid ICE crackdowns

“Dallas diversity is our strength,” Michael Igo said. “It contributes to the economic and cultural vibrancy of our community.”

DALLAS — Amid ramped-up immigration enforcement across the country, including in North Texas, Interim Dallas Police Chief Michael Ego has released a video statement saying victims have the right to report crimes regardless of immigration status.

“Dallas diversity is our strength,” Igo said. “It contributes to the economic and cultural vibrancy of our community.”

Igo said the department would continue to serve all residents without regard to protected categories like race, ethnicity, origin or sexual orientation.

“DPD will continue to enforce city and state laws while upholding the Constitutional rights of residents,” Igo said.

Igo said the department would continue to be responsive to community needs and promote public safety for all of its residents. DPD and other city departments are guided by the Dallas Welcoming Strategic Plan, which Igo said serves as a plan for social integration and inclusion for the city’s diverse communities.

There are currently no changes to how DPD and the city will provide its services.

“This also means victims of crime have the right to report it regardless of immigration status,” Igo said.

The department, Igo said, will continue following any changes to federal or state law and communicate if it impacts police or municipal operations.

This announcement comes after Immigration and Customs Enforcement ramped up arrests over the weekend, arresting nearly 1,000 people on Sunday and nearly 300 people on Saturday. There have also been similar operations in Texas and other states like Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia and Nebraska. This comes following President Donald Trump’s campaign promise of mass deportations.
