KERRVILLE, Texas — “Look for the helpers,” is a famous Fred Rogers quote that has been used time and time again by the mayor of Kerrville. It’s especially relevant in Kerr and Kendall County where hundreds of volunteers are stepping up to lend a hand.
Since the day of the flooding, Shims Be Blessed Catering and Food Trailer has been feeding first responders and those impacted by the floods that need a warm meal.
“It’s just devastating,” said Shonna Foster, owner of Shim’s. “The whole town feels it. Just anyone you run into, it’s just like a big hug and, you know, we’re just.,, It’s the best community. I mean, I just don’t know. I try not to get upset.”
It’s overwhelming for Foster. That day they were supposed to be celebrating the fourth of July, and were one of six food trucks set to be at Louise Hays Park for the festivities. What’s happened since, is overwhelming.
“It can happen anywhere,” Foster stated through tears. “I mean, I never dreamed, you know, something like this would happen here, but, it’s just just. I don’t know.”
For her, stepping up to help is what she can do right now. She’s feeding people around the clock. Beginning at 3:30 in the morning, she’s cooking breakfast that’ll be delivered later to first responders. For lunch and dinner, which is served until 9 pm, she’s feeding whoever needs a warm meal.
On Wednesday, she made over a hundred breakfast sandwiches and several hundred cheeseburgers.
“I don’t want anyone to be shy about coming and eating because we want to feed everyone no matter what,” she said.
Every meal is for free, and she’s able to provide it thanks to generous donors. Locally, around the state and country, people have stepped up to make sure she has buns, paper bags, eggs, sourdough, and whatever else she may need.
“It’s because of our donors that, you know, all these donations that we’re able to do it,” Foster said. “And so as long as that’s happening, we’ll keep doing it because it doesn’t end this week. It doesn’t end in a month. You know, it’s going to take a while to, to build up again.”
