SAN ANTONIO — Five students and a school bus driver were hospitalized Tuesday morning after a Southwest Legacy High School bus overturned on Loop 410 while transporting students to school.
The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. as the bus was taking an entrance ramp onto Loop 410 South, according to police. Authorities said the 63-year-old driver claimed she could not see clearly when she veered off the road and drove into the concrete embankment, causing the bus to overturn. No other vehicles were involved, and investigators said road conditions were not icy at the time of the crash.
There were 33 students on board. One of those students, Leah Guzman, said the crash happened suddenly.
“It happened really fast and all of a sudden, I’m on the side,” Leah said.
Leah said she did not see what caused the crash and was looking at the seat in front of her when the bus overturned.
In the moments after impact, Leah said a fellow student stepped up to help others escape.
“He was trying to break the window, and I don’t know if he did, but it was open when I got out,” she said. “He was telling everyone to get up and get out and making sure everyone had their belongings.”
Students crawled out through the back door and through the roof of the bus. She then called her mother, Adriana Guzman.
“When I picked up, she was crying,” Adriana said. “I rushed to the scene.”
When Adriana saw her daughter was safe, she said relief set in.
“She just came into my arms and I hugged her,” Adriana said. “She kind of let it all out and started crying.”
Leah was treated and released and was able to return home. Five students and the bus driver were taken to the hospital. The school district said none of the students suffered serious injuries.
“I’m very thankful for all the prayers,” Adriana said. “Overall, the kids are doing OK, but it could have been worse.”
As of Tuesday night, two students and the bus driver remained hospitalized at University Hospital but were expected to recover, the district said.
Investigators say no charges are expected at this time.
