‘It makes you feel insecure’ | Family Dollar shooting leaves some shoppers fearful

According to SAPD, the suspect became upset after being told to leave and ended up firing off one round at the soda display before taking off.

SAN ANTONIO — Residents are keeping extra vigilant after Monday night’s shooting at a dollar store on the west side.

San Antonio police responded to reports of shots fired at the Family Dollar along the 5800 block of Culebra Road just before 7:30 p.m.

According to SAPD, a man known by store workers for stealing items before popped by once again and was told to leave.

Police say while leaving the Family Dollar, the suspect pointed a gun at a worker and ended up firing off one round toward the soda display. No one was injured and police are searching for leads to find the suspect. No description of the suspect was provided either.

KENS 5 spoke with numerous shoppers who didn’t wish to go on camera about what happened. Riccardo, who only wished to use his first name for safety reasons, visits the Family Dollar where the shooting happened mainly to assist his parents.

“We actually grew up in this area, my parents live here now and they’ve been here for 40 plus years and it’s sad because I think this area has kind of gone downhill. We hear people robbing the dollar store and a gunshot. It’s sad, it makes you feel insecure,” Riccardo said.

While police continue searching for leads, Riccardo is hopeful the suspected shooter is caught.

“It’s scary because we’ve heard random gunshots in the area before and sometimes you just don’t know. Is there going to be a random bullet that just penetrates a house one day and I end up finding my parents dead.”
