‘It’s a big mess’: San Antonio apartment given code violation notice over mounting trash problem

A Waste Management spokesperson was unable to explain what led to the “initial non-service.” Apartment management was unable to respond KENS 5’s request for comment.

SAN ANTONIO — Mounds of trash, the stench of waste and a growing sense of frustration about quality of life is what tenants at a northeast-side apartment complex have been dealing with for weeks—with no immediate resolution in sight.

The Grand Apartment Homes, located off the 14000 block of Nacogdoches Road, is home to numerous overflowed dumpsters accompanied by piles of trash bags.

One tenant who didn’t wish to be identified by her real name, fearing retaliation from apartment management, described the situation as a “big mess.”

“We’ve had crazy amounts of wind and rain, and there’s trash all across the yards and parking lots,” said the tenant, who we’ll refer to as Leslie in this story. “It’s just spreading as time goes on.”

Leslie is among many tenants who’ve reached out to apartment management for a timeline on when the issue will be resolved. But, so far, they’ve been left in the dark.

She said the issue began around the week of Memorial Day and has only worsened.

Leslie noted the apartment complex has dealt with pest problems in the past when racoons popped by. She said the garbage trucks, which typically come by in the early morning hours, haven’t shown up in days.

There are dumpsters in four different areas of the apartment complex; each site looks similar in terms of the amount of accumulated waste.

“It’s very weird. It makes us wonder what’s going on,” she said.

KENS 5 attempted to contact property management, but the leasing office was locked and calls went unanswered.

City officials confirmed the apartment complex has received a code violation notice for overflowing dumpsters. An inspection took place on May 29. Apartment management has until Monday to resolve the issue before the city issues a citation.

A Waste Management spokesperson stressed the company’s commitment to “service in our communities in an efficient and timely manner,” but due to company policy, they were unable to explain what led to the “initial non-service.”
