Investigators say the 43-year-old suspect pulled out a knife during a foot chase Sunday night.
SAN ANTONIO — Homeowners in a northwest-side neighborhood where a man was shot and killed by police, say it happened in their neighbor’s backyard.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said around 7 p.m. Sunday, an officer tried to pull over a 43-year-old driver near a gas station off Loop 410 and Vance Jackson.
However, he said the driver ditched his vehicle and ran off towards Birchwood Drive. He said he jumped fences and ended up in a backyard. The officer chased after him.
“The suspect stopped, pulled a knife, which is reported,” McManus said. “Again, this is preliminary information.”
He said his officer tried to use a taser but when it did not work, he fired multiple shots, killing the suspect.
Sylvia Smith lives next door to the home where it happened. She said she did not witness the shooting but saw the police activity afterwards.
“We’ve had different incidents, spaced apart but nothing like this,” Smith said.
McManus said they recovered a knife at the scene. He said the 43-year-old was on parole until 2029 and had a gun visible in his car, which would of violated that parole.
“History of drug possession, burglary, unauthorized use of a vehicle,” McManus said.
The chief did say repeatedly that the information given is preliminary and could change as the investigation unfolds.
“It’s a sad situation when something like this occurs,” Smith said.
The officer involved has four years with SAPD. Like all shootings involving police, the district attorney will review the case.
The identity of the suspect killed has not been released by the medical examiner’s office.
