SAN ANTONIO — Monday marks a year since a 20-year-old Bexar County deputy was killed while driving home.
Meredith Portillo’s car was hit by a wrong-way driver on Interstate-37, close to Loop 1604.
Portillo’s family is holding a memorial to honor her life and raise awareness on drunk driving.
On this day in 2024, Meredith Portillo was driving home with her friends Hailey Adams, and Koree Alcoser near 2 a.m. when authorities say Jorge Pargas Jr. hit them head-on.
Portillo and Pargas both died at the scene. Alcoser died shortly after from his injuries.
Portillo’s family tells us they were told by investigators Pargas was driving drunk.
“I don’t wish this on any mother. But I’m not going to say bye,” said Cindy Portillo, Meredith’s mother. “It’s until we meet again.”
Portillo joined the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in September 2023.
She worked at the jail for half a year and the sheriff’s office says she made a positive impact on inmates’ lives.
Monday’s memorial will be at Braunig Lake from 6 until 8 p.m.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving will also be present.
