Moody, a former U.S. Marines pilot, will continue to participate in Bexar County Commissioners Court meetings remotely while serving at MacDill AFB in Florida.
Grant Moody, who represents Bexar County Precinct 3 on the Commissioners Court and is a lieutenant colonel with the Marine Reserves, has been called to active duty “due to escalating tensions with Iran in the Middle East,” his chief of staff said.
He’s expected to support operations at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, until early August. His office says he will participate in Commissioners Court meetings remotely during a pivotal time that could see Bexar County officially call for a venue tax election to help fund a downtown Spurs arena ahead of an August deadline.
But he told KENS 5 he’s confident his team will be able to work for Precinct 3 constituents behalf, adding his superiors are working to ensure he has the time he needs to tend to his commissioners court responsibilities while on active duty.
“I think it’s important that, especially in Military City, USA, we remember that those are actual service members, those are actual families that have to step away from work, step away from their families and go heed our nation’s call to serve and keep our country safe,” Moody said.
Moody has remained on the reserves force after serving as a Marine pilot for a decade, according to his county biography. He’s served on the Commissioners Court since 2022 and this is the first occasion he’s been called to active duty in that time, although he’s continued to participate in routine training and drill periods.
As far as what he’ll be doing on active duty, Moody said he’ll be “augmenting” the Marine Corps detachment of U.S. Central Command, which responds to conflicts in the Middle East. That includes “working within that position on operational planning and other staff responsibilities,” he said.
It’s also a possibility his Marine obligations extend beyond the 45 days he’s been ordered to serve, although he’s hopeful it ends sooner. He says he was on vacation with his family when he got the call.
“That’s what you sign up for in the reserves,” he said. “Obviously I hate to leave my family, I hate to leave Bexar County and my team right now. But this is important. It’s important for our country, I think it’s important for the world. It’s obviously important for our friend and ally, Israel. So we’re gonna do the job to the best of our ability.”
Israeli began attacking Iran’s capital last week, targeting the country’s nuclear program and raising the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. Iran responded by firing some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones, killing at least 24 people in Israel and wounding hundreds.
On Wednesday, Israel lifted some restrictions on daily life, suggesting the missile threat from Iran was easing. But the development came as Iran’s supreme leader rejected U.S. calls for surrender, warning that any military involvement by the Americans would cause “irreparable damage to them.”
U.S. President Donald Trump demanded in a social media post on Tuesday that Iran surrender without conditions, having hinted at greater American involvement after initially distancing himself from Israel’s surprise attack on Friday.
