ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas — Atascosa County and the city of Jourdanton are remembering a voice that helped everyone when they needed it most.
Andrew Guerra worked as a 911 dispatcher in the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office and recently died from kidney and heart problems.
His funeral is happening Friday afternoon, and deputies found a special way to remember his impact leading up to the day.
But inside the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office, you can feel the silence.
This is where Guerra worked for 13 years as a 911 dispatcher.
“People were like, ‘Oh, I had to call 911 today.’ But once I knew it was Andrew on the line — like, I’m good,” Guerra’s wife Amanda said.
Amanda says they first met in 2010, working together for the Jourdanton Little League.
She was the organization president. Guerra was Coach D.
“Kids from 15 years ago go ‘Hey, Coach Drew, how are you doing?” Amanda said. “You know, ‘we haven’t seen you in a while.’ That was just Drew.”
Guerra and Amanda later worked together at the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office.
They fell in love, joined families, and got married in 2022.
That’s when Guerra’s doctors gave him unexpected news: kidney failure. His kidneys were functioning at just 11%.
“I had no idea,” Amanda said. “It’s like once your kidneys fail, you can’t heal them.”
Amanda became his caregiver for the last year and a half. Guerra still worked through the pain as a dispatcher — until he died in the hospital.
“Life just seems like it might be a little scary without him,” Amanda said. “But he made such a good mark on the world.”
After Guerra’s passing, the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office blacked out his desk, leaving his picture up as a salute to his service.
They also brought him from San Antonio back home.
“We’re all so connected together that it’s not just losing an employee,” Sheriff Jake Guerra said. “It’s like losing a family member.”
The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office is keeping Guerra’s desk blacked out until his interment, so Andrew will always be remembered by his smile and the light he gave others.
“The illness didn’t stop him from being selfless,” Amanda said. “And I think that, there’s no better human being like that.”
After Friday’s funeral, the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office will hold a 10-42 End of Watch call honoring the life of Andrew Guerra.
The visitation starts at 3 p.m. and the funeral service is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. The location is 561 FM 3350 in Jourdanton.
