‘It’s not every day you see that’ | Small plane loses control upon landing at private San Antonio runway, ends up on street

Two people were onboard at the time.

SAN ANTONIO — No injuries were reported after a small plane lost control while trying to land on a private north-side runway and instead crashed into a fence, prompting a response from Bexar County authorities.

San Antonio police officials say the aircraft didn’t slow down enough upon landing, resulting in the crash in the 500 block of Heimer Road, near East Bitters and U.S. 281. The owner of Twin Oaks Airport told KENS 5 the pilot had more than 30 years of flying experience but his brakes stopped working, causing the crash.

Video provided by a KENS 5 viewer didn’t appear to show major damage to the plane.

No other damage was reported. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

Two people were onboard at the time of the landing.

Families nearby said they were shocked when they saw the plane in the road.

“It’s not every day you see that,” Tatiana Esparza said.

One homeowner who lives across the street from the runway wanted to remain anonymous but said this incident does raise some safety concerns.

“I have school aged children, we would be walking down the road when it happened but luckily we stopped at the library,” she said.

A similar incident happened in April 2018, when a single-engine plane crashed through a fence at the end of Twin-Oaks Airport runway and ended up in the middle of Heimer.
