‘It’s really just disappointing’ | NISD police investigating after driver breaks into high school and tears up football turf

Just a few weeks before the new school year, NISD is working to fix the damage caused by a trespasser on the athletic field at Holmes High School.

SAN ANTONIO — The Northside ISD Police Department is investigating a reckless act of criminal mischief.

Just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, district officials say a person in a pickup truck broke into Holmes High School and started doing donuts on the athletic field.

“This is the damage they did,” said Head Football Coach Pete Padilla, pointing to tire tracks. “It’s real deep, it undercut the turf all the way to the ground. Unfortunately, it’s bad for ankles and it’s unplayable.”

The school’s athletic coordinator first noticed the damage on Monday.

“We had our football camp this summer,” said Coach Padilla. “It’s our youth camp for fourth grade to ninth grade. Our coaches were setting up the field and we were all excited to see the kids come around. We got here early and walked the field. One of the coaches said, ‘There is some damage here on the field.’”

Coaches had to section off a portion of the field to prevent injury.

Security cameras captured the suspect’s vehicle.

“It was about a nine minute incident,” said Coach Padilla. “They were spinning their tires, they got on our soccer field.”

National football champions and Olympians have practiced on the Holmes High School field, Coach Padilla says. The community also scores with access to the turf.

“We will have easily 150 kids on a weekly basis, and that’s not including our kids,” said Coach Padilla. “So, for someone to come and damage this area, it’s really just disappointing. We always teach our kids the decisions they make have consequences; good or bad. Unfortunately, the person who did this made a bad decision. But once again, our community is strong, and we will come together.”

Support for the Huskies is pouring in. Coach Padilla says the district is working quickly to re-turf the damaged section.

High school football practice begins on Monday, August 5. Students will return to class on Monday, August 19.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s fixed by Monday,” Coach Padilla said.

The incident could result in serious criminal charges. If you recognize the truck or think you know the driver, please call Northside ISD’s Safeline at 210-397-SAFE (7233). You can give tips anonymously.
