SAN ANTONIO — A family is in shock after a brutal murder on the south side Saturday. Police said a 26-year-old man admitted to slashing his 81-year-old husband’s throat.
On Thursday, the victim’s daughter, Katrina Mercado, drove into town from California. She said she had just learned of the killing Monday.
“It’s unbelievable in terms of what happened,” Mercado said.
Investigators said Alberto Rafael Ferrer-Cabrera called them Saturday stating he had killed his husband. When police got to the home off Felisa Street, they said Ferrer-Cabrera had blood on his face and hands.
According to the police report, he held out his hands in fists to be handcuffed. The police report states when Weynandt got up that morning to use the restroom, his throat was slashed.
The landlord said the suspect had called her as well, admitting to the crime.
“I wish I could understand what led him to do what he did,” Mercado said.
Investigators said they learned while interviewing Ferrer-Cabrera, he claimed he was becoming stressed due to his husband’s health and because his own son was in a different country.
“It just seems like pure evil,” Mercado said.
Mercado said her father was from Texas and moved back a few years ago. She said he always had the dream of spending his final years in Texas.
However, she is not sure how and when he met his husband. She knew they had recently married last April.
“I know very little about the individual and I think anytime in asking about him there really wasn’t a lot shared with me unfortunately,” Mercado said.
Online court records show, along with murder, Ferrer-Cabrera is accused of illegal entry from a foreign nation. Mercado said she believed he was taking advantage of her father.
“He did commit a very just heinous crime, I think he should be held accountable,” Mercado said. “I don’t think they should go easy on him.”
While she is still trying to come to understand what happened, she wants people to know her dad was a loving father, grandfather and veteran.
“He was such a kindhearted person, he would literally do anything for anyone if you ever needed help,” Mercado said.
According to our sources, an ICE hold has been placed on the suspect. Mercado said she was told by investigators; they will move forward with prosecuting the case.
